グローバリゼーションの概念を再検討し、アメリカを脱中心化した視点から見直そうとする文学研究の中で、アメリカを大陸としてではなく、移動性に富み流動的な本質を持つ「島」として捉える視座が生まれた。本研究は、この新思潮をアメリカ演劇・演劇史研究に適用し、批評家ガヤトリ・スピヴァックの「惑星思考」とゲイリー・オキヒロの「島世界」論を援用しながら、アメリカ演劇をより相対的に捉えると共に、今までのアメリカ演劇史を再考する。具体的には、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭のハワイにおけるアメリカ人と日本人移民による演劇活動を再現・分析し、アメリカ演劇史の流れの中に位置づける。
3年計画の3年目にあたる本年度は、2021年8月までハワイ大学マノア校演劇舞踊学部にて在外研究を行い、資料収集にあたった。当該時期にハワイで出版された新聞2紙Pacific Commercial Advertiserと『やまと新聞』（1895年創刊）から、日英両語による演劇関連の記事、劇評、広告を収集しデータベース化を進めた。
また本年度は、ハワイにおける日米演劇文化の交渉を考察する上で重要となる、文化の生成される「場所location」の概念に着目した。具体的には、1920年代を中心に勃興した黒人文芸復興活動であるハーレム・ルネサンスにおいて、当該時期のアフリカ系アメリカ演劇文化がブロードウェイ、ハーレム、巡業サーキットという3つの「場所」において、人種と階級の面で重層的に展開していたことを明らかにした。
Based on the concepts of planetary by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and island world by Gary Okihiro, by reproducing and analyzing both American theater and theater culture of Japanese immigrants in Hawai'i from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, this study aimed to reconsider the conventional theater history that is centered on theater activities within the boundaries of the mainland U.S. and the Broadway / non-Broadway binary perspectives.
Following such basic stance, this year the researcher examined the notion of "location" where culture emerges and develops. Focusing on the three locations --- Broadway, Harlem and theater circuits --- where African American theaters flourished during the age of Harlem Renaissance, the study clarified the complexity of American theater culture in terms of both race and class.
The researcher studied at University of Hawai'i at Manoa as a visiting scholar until August 2021. As in the third year of the ongoing three-year-project, the researcher continued on the project of collecting articles, reviews and advertisements on contemporary performances in Hawai'i from English newspapers Pacific Commercial Advertiser and Japanese newspaper The Yamato Shimbun (first published in 1895).
