本年は中津藩の士族社会において、明治改元後の新しい思想体系の構築に主導的役割を果たしたと目することができる小幡篤次郎を中心に、まずは彼の基礎資料となる評伝の収集を行った。小幡は同時代に高い評価を得る一方で、その業績すぐに福澤と同化し、これまでに伝記的資料がまとめられることがなかった。本研究は明治維新が傑出した人物の思想と行動によって成されたのではなく、それを受容し支え普遍化させた近世からの知識層に着目し、その役割を明らかに明治維新の意義を考えることを目的としているので、彼の評伝から収集を始めるのは妥当であると考えた。死亡記事を始め、昭和期までを視野に記事を収集、『小幡篤次郎伝記資料』Ⅰ・Ⅱとしてまとめた。また書簡を中心に彼の自筆資料も収集した。そこから見えてきたのは、時代が下がり実際に小幡に接した人物が少なくなるにつれ、温和で主張がない小幡像が出来上がり、明確な社会構想を持ちそれに応じた主張を行う、明治初期の翻訳活動と対比すれば当然といえる姿が見えてこなくなることで、それは明治維新がステレオタイプ化される過程ともいえる。
また近世末期に中津藩政を担ってきた人物の、明治以後の洋学との接触について調査を開始した。具体的には中津藩上士の梅田家、桑名家、鈴木家、逸見家の資料である。本年度は藩要職時代のものが中心となったが、これまで知られていなかった福澤諭吉の父百助の書簡からは、士族社会の上下階層の交流が従来言われてきたように厳しく制限されたものであったのか、疑いが出てきた。近世における知識層としてのネットワークが、より重要視されるべきであろう。コロナ禍もあり明治期以降を十分に調べることができず、今後の継続調査が必要であるが、明治10年以降地方行政が固まりゆく中で、彼らの行政手腕は再び発揮されるようになることがわかり、明治維新の理解には、近世に形成された知識層の解明が必須といえよう。
This year, I started by collecting critical biographies served basic materials for Tokujiro Obata, who played a leading role in the samurai society of the Nakatsu domain to build a new thought after the Meiji Restoration. Obata was highly evaluated by his contemporaries, but his achievements were quickly included with Fukuzawa's, and no biographical material has ever been compiled. This research focuses not only on the ideas and actions of prominent figures, but also on the intellects from the early modern period who accepted and universalized their ideas and actions in the Meiji Restoration. I thought it appropriate to start collecting from his critical biography. I collected articles until the Showa period and edited "Obata Tokujiro Biography Materials" I and II. I also collected his handwritten materials, mainly letters. I could see as the number of people who directly contacted with Obata decreased, the image of Obata became a person who was mild and unassertive, emerged though he played a leading role by translated many western books. It can be said that was the process of becoming stereotyped the Meiji Restoration.
In addition, I started investigating the contact with Western studies after the Meiji period by the person who oversaw the administration of the Nakatsu Domain in the late modern period. Specifically, it is the materials of the Umeda family, the Kuwana family, the Suzuki family, and the Henmi family, who were higher status Nakatsu samurai. This year, I researched materials before the Meiji Restoration and found a unknown letter from Yukichi Fukuzawa's father, Hyakusuke. It revealed that relationship between the upper and lower classes of the samurai society were not severely restricted. The network of intellects in the early modern period should be given more importance. Due to the corona crisis, it was not possible to fully investigate the Meiji and post-Meiji era, and further investigation is necessary. Therefore, to understand the Meiji Restoration, it is essential to elucidate the intellects'role that were formed in the early modern period.
