Thoreau, Our Contemporary: The Legacy of the Artistic and Political Functions of 'The Bean-Field'"と題して口頭発表を行った。
My study explored the artistic and political significance of performativity in Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," focusing on the chapter 'The Bean-Field.' Among the 18 chapters in "Walden," this chapter most distinctly shows that his writing serves two purposes: it is a record of his actual living experience but, at the same time, he employs his activities as his artistic performance. In the chapter 'The Bean-Field,' the record of his farming activities is easily rendered metaphorically as a protest against slavery and the Mexican War because Thoreau must have been highly conscious of farming as a political performance from the beginning. I believe that my study makes a significant contribution to Thoreau studies because it situates contemporary artists in the literary tradition of documenting and expressing one's life experiences as a form of artistic and political commentary.
I gave my presentation entitled "Thoreau, Our Contemporary: The Legacy of the Artistic and Political Functions of 'The Bean-Field,'" at the 80the Annual Gathering of the Thoreau Society, held online from July 7th to 11th, 2021.
