江戸時代の美術史研究において、風俗画及び浮世絵にみられる多様な表現の検討は重要な研究課題のひとつである。なかでも幕末期に多数制作された版画では、風景を描くいわゆる「名所絵」が新たに誕生し、江戸や地方のランドマークを図像化した作例が往時の人々の郷土愛や旅情を誘発したと考えられる。
本研究は、主として庶民文化の所産と目される江戸期浮世絵の風景版画のうち、西洋由来の透視図法を用いて合理的な遠近表現を志向した「浮絵」について、新たな知見を加えるものである。具体的には、幕末期の浮世絵師・葛飾北斎が若き日に「春朗」号で描いた浮絵の版画について、その全容を再確認するとともに、現存する無落款の作品に春朗時代の北斎の作品が二件あることを新たに指摘した。
浮世絵師・葛飾北斎の画業初期、二十代から三十代半ばまでの春朗号時代に描かれた浮絵の錦絵版画は、現在十一点が確認され、それらの版元は、西村屋与八＝永寿堂版が九点、佐野屋喜兵衛＝佐野喜版が二点となっている。このたび注目する、米国ボストン美術館と日本個人に所蔵される二点の浮絵の版画は、いずれも浅草寺の雷門を描いた永寿堂版の作品であり、無落款ながらも、画中のさまざまな様式上の特徴から判断して、春朗号時代の北斎初期の作品であると考察される。
両図が無落款で刊行された理由についてはさまざまな可能性があるが、もっとも重要な事実は、この図が刊行された時期と、１７６７年に焼失した雷門が１７９５年にようやく再建される時期とがほぼ重なるのではないか、という決して偶然とは思われない符号である。当該の時期、北斎は春朗号から宗理号へと改号しており、そうした事情が作用して、異例ながら無款という形で雷神門の浮絵二図がともに刊行された、という蓋然性があると結論づけた。すなわち、既存の北斎による版画の総作品リストに、新たに二点を加えることができた。
In the study of art history of the Edo period, one of the most important research topics is the examination of various expressions in genre paintings and ukiyoe prints. In particular, in the end of the Edo period, many prints were produced, and so-called "Meisho-e" (pictures of famous places) depicting landscapes were newly created.
This study aims to add new knowledge to the ukiyoe landscape prints of the Edo period, which are considered to be mainly the product of popular culture, about the ukiyoe prints that aimed at rational perspective expression using Western-derived perspective drawing. Specifically, I reconfirmed the entirety of the uki-e prints that Katsushika Hokusai, a late Edo-period ukiyo-e artist, drew as a young man under the name "Shunro", and pointed out that there are two existing works by Hokusai of the Shunro period that do not bear his signature.
There are currently eleven known uki-e woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai from his early years of painting, his twenties to his mid-thirties when he was known as Shunro. The two uki-e prints we are interested in here, one in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA, and the other in the collection of a Japanese private individual, both depict the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) of Sensoji Temple, and are Eijudo editions.
There are various possibilities as to why both prints were published without signatures, but the most important one is the unlikely coincidence that the publication of these paintings coincided with the rebuilding of the Kaminarimon gate in 1795 after it had been destroyed by fire in 1767. Hokusai changed his name from Shunro to Sori during this period, and we conclude that these circumstances may have led to the publication of the two uki-e prints of the Kaminarimon in an unusual but unsigned form. We believe that we have been able to add two new works to the existing list of Hokusai's prints.
