グローバリゼーションの概念を再検討し、アメリカを脱中心化した視点から見直そうとする文学研究の中で、アメリカを大陸としてではなく、移動性に富み流動的な本質を持つ「島」として捉える視座が生まれた。本研究は、この新思潮をアメリカ演劇・演劇史研究に援用し、アメリカ演劇をより相対的に捉えると共に、今までのアメリカ演劇史を再考する。具体的には、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭のハワイにおけるアメリカ人と日本人移民による演劇活動を再現・分析し、アメリカ演劇史の流れの中に位置づける。
3年計画の2年目にあたる本年度は、各論として19世紀のアメリカ人役者が記した旅行記の発掘と分析を行った。具体的には、アメリカを起点にハワイを経由した巡業の記録4点と日本を経由した巡業の記録3点をもとに旅程と興行形態の再現を試みた。さらに、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にわたる帝国主義的膨張の時代に、アメリカ演劇もまた世界中に広がる興行ネットワークを形成していたことを、特に太平洋世界に着目して検証した。この成果は次年度以降に公刊予定である。
また前年度に引き続き、当該時期にハワイで出版された新聞2紙Pacific Commercial Advertiserと『やまと新聞』（1895年創刊）から、日英両語による演劇関連の記事、劇評、広告を収集しデータベース化を進めた。
By reproducing and analyzing both American theater and theater culture of Japanese immigrants in Hawai'i from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, this study aimed to reconsider the conventional theater history that is centered on theater activities within the boundaries of the mainland U.S. and the Broadway / non-Broadway binary perspectives.
Following such basic stance, this year the researcher examined unknown travel logs written by 19th-century American actors and managers who went on tours through the Pacific world and beyond: four writings on travels that stopped by Hawaii and three books on travels via Japan. The study showed that there was a vast network of tours that echoed expansionism of the American empire at the turn of the century.
As in the second year of the ongoing three-year-project, the researcher continued on the project of collecting articles, reviews and advertisements on contemporary performances in Hawaii from English newspapers Pacific Commercial Advertiser and Japanese newspaper The Yamato Shimbun (first published in 1895).
