1930年代の上海では数多くのすぐれた映画が製作され、中国国産映画の「黄金時代」とも称されている。本研究は、1930年代の上海映画が、後の時代の中国国内の映画のみならず、台湾や香港の映画製作にどのような影響を与えたのかを考察するものである。
とりわけ、上海映画の代表的監督のひとりである孫瑜に注目し、中国共産党の映画史で「左翼映画監督」とされてきた評価の妥当性を再検討した。その中で、孫瑜作品で強調される女性の肉体美や農村と都市の表現の違い、メロドラマ的な物語構造を指摘した。
その上で、国民党政権が台湾に遷移した後の台湾映画において、孫瑜監督の作り上げたような映像世界がどのように映画製作に影響しているのかについて、重点的に検討を進めた。その結果、1960年代半ばから国民党政権の主導により製作されるようになった、いわゆる「健康写実映画」の中に、多くの共通点が見られることが明らかになった。特に、「健康写実映画」として製作された李行監督の初期作品の中に、1930年代の孫瑜映画に酷似した女性の肉体美を強調した映像やメロドラマ的な物語構造が見られることを指摘した。また、映画製作の状況においても、伝統的な物語に根ざした映画が流行した1920年代の後に1930年代の上海映画が登場してきたように、「健康写実映画」も伝統的なイマジネーションに基づく台湾語映画ブームの後に登場してきており、類似性を見出すことができた。
これらの成果は、「台湾『健康写実映画』と1930年代上海映画」という論考として発表するとともに、公開講演会において同内容の口頭発表も行った。また、1930年代の上海映画が後の中国国産にどのような影響を与えたかについても、日本映像学会アジア映画研究会で「孫瑜監督作品に見られるスタイルの一貫性」というタイトルで研究発表を行った。
なお、香港映画への影響については、各種資料を収集する段階にとどまったため、来年度以降の課題としたい。
Many excellent movies were produced in 1930s Shanghai, a period frequently referred to as a 'Golden Age' of domestically-produced film in mainland China. This study examines how the 1930s Shanghai cinema influenced film production in Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as in mainland China subsequently.
In particular, the study focuses on Sun Yu, one of the greatest directors of 1930s Shanghai cinema, and re-evaluates his reputation as a director of 'left wing cinema' in the history of films produced by the CCP. This re-evaluation draws attention to Sun Yu's characteristic representations of the female form, differences in his portrayal of rural and urban areas, and his emphasis on melodramatic structure.
The re-evaluation of Sun Yu's films mainly examines the influence of Sun Yu's cinematic imagination on film production in Taiwan after the transition of the KMT regime to the island, concluding that many features found in the so-called 'healthy realism' cinema made under the leadership of the KMT from the mid-1960s onwards can be traced back to Sun Yu. In particular, in the early works of Li Xing, a director of many 'healthy realism' movies, the emphasis on the physical beauty of women and melodramatic narrative structures closely resembles Sun Yu's works. Similarities between Sun Yu's works and 'healthy realism' cinema can also be found in the sequence of thematic development as the 'healthy realism' movement came after a period of popular Taiwanese Hokkien cinematic works (Taiyupian), which were based on traditional stories and imagination, a chronological order that parallels the emergence of 1930s Shanghai cinema following an era of movies based on Chinese traditional stories and imaginative concepts.
These research findings were presented in the paper "Taiwan 'healthy realism' cinema and 1930s Shanghai cinema". An oral presentation of the same content was also made at a public lecture on Sinophone puppet plays and cinema. In addition, at a research meeting on Asian film of the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences (JASIAS), the author presented a portion of the results of this research under the title "Consistency of styles in films directed by Sun Yu". This later presentation explored the influence of 1930s Shanghai cinema on subsequent film production in mainland China.
The author is currently collating resources concerning the influence of 1930s Shanghai cinema and Sun Yu on film production in Hong Kong and intends to address this topic next term.
