エリザベス朝の劇作家、詩人ウィリアム・シェイクスピア(1564－1616)の作品は、没後400年を経てなお、世界各地で出版、上演が重ねられているのみならず、新しい世代のアーティストたちの創作活動に大きな影響を及ぼし続けている。才能あるアーティストたちが、400年にわたって、シェイクスピアの作品と向き合ってきた歴史は、そのままイギリス文化史の重要な一部をなしている。シェイクスピアが後の時代の文化、芸術に与えた影響の諸相を、19世紀初頭から20世紀のアーティストに特に注目して分析する本研究の、2年目に当たる2018年度は、サミュエル・テイラー・コールリッジを初めとするロマン派詩人のシェイクスピア受容の分析を一つの柱として、関連する講演録、エッセイ類、備忘録など、多岐にわたる文献を収集し、分析を進めてきた。また二つ目の柱である、ドイツ出身のユダヤ人映画監督、エルンスト・ルビッチが、シェイクスピアの『ハムレット』をモティーフとして制作した反ナチ映画『生きるか、死ぬか』(1942)に関しても研究を進め、論文を作成した。2018年夏に行われたInternational Shakespeare Conferenceに提出したセミナーペーパー'The Comedy of Hamlet in Nazi-Occupied Warsaw: An Exploration of Lubitsch's _To Be or Not To Be_ (1942)' は、ケンブリッジ大学出版会刊行の年刊誌_Shakespeare Survey_に採用され、2019年夏に出版予定である。
The works of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) have influenced world culture for more than 400 years. His plays and poems are not only read and performed all over the world, but keep inspiring new generations of writers, painters and musicians to create new art works. The purpose of my three-year research project is to explore Shakespeare's varied and powerful 'afterlives' by paying special attention to their 19th and 20th-century manifestations. One focus of the project academic year 2018 was Samuel Taylor Coleridge's reaction to Shakespeare as seen in the Romantic poet's literary lectures notebooks and letters. I also studied German-Jewish film director Ernst Lubitsch's anti-Nazi film, _To Be or Not to Be_ (1942), to analyse the unique position the Polish comedy occupies in Hollywood's war effort. The seminar paper I submitted to the International Shakespeare Conference, entitled 'The Comedy of _Hamlet_ in Nazi-Occupied Warsaw: An Exploration of Lubitsch's _To Be or Not To Be_ (1942)' was accepted for publication in the forthcoming issue (2019) of _Shakespeare Survey_ (Cambridge University Press).
