On campus, there doubtless are quite a few students who have psychological problems but never seek consultations. Some of them must be unable to even come to campus. As professionals involved with student counseling, the authors aim to enhance the on-campus counseling system so that students can feel free to access it with peace of mind before their psychological problems become more serious or protracted, making their maladjustments more obvious. Our study, which focuses on remote counseling using IT, serves as an important step toward this goal.
To provide remote counseling safely and effectively to the students who are already maladjusted to the campus life and have difficulty visiting the counseling room on campus, we have continued to carry out basic research to identify the differences between face-to-face and remote counseling using IT.
Based on the results of our previous study, beginning this academic year, we have incorporated remote counseling in student counseling services at Wellness Center, and have realized student support activities whereby the students access the counselors online from home, and work on their own psychological themes.
We also designed a remote counseling system targeting students on the Tsuruoka Town Campus of Keio (TTCK), which allowed us to propose specific procedures between the TTCK Business Offices and the SFC Wellness Center and thus build a mutually cooperative setup. The study revealed, however, that tasks and challenges remained, such as problems with the room that was offered for use with remote counseling at the TTCK, which was at an inconvenient location for the students, both physically and psychologically.
As seen, a setup has been established and improved to enable students to undergo counseling via IT without having to come to the campus: the breadth of student counseling activities has thus been expanded. Tasks and challenges that are yet to be resolved have also become evident. These are likely to contribute to our research and assist with developing remote counseling techniques in the future.
