本研究は, アメリカ合衆国における大学・学士課程のリベラル・エデュケイション(Liberal Education)の思想・制度・内容・方法について, 現在まで100年以上にわたって強い影響力をもってきた, アメリカ・カレッジ・大学協会(Association of American Colleges & Universities : AAC&U)の活動とその成果を歴史的に考察し, 大学史上の意味を解明することを目的とした。AAC&Uは, 最初1915年に160機関が加盟したアメリカ・カレッジ協会(Association of American Colleges : AAC)として発足し, その後1995年に現在の名称に改称した。この間, 全米の公立・私立の4年制大学および2年制コミュニティ・カレッジを含む約1,300の大学が加盟する団体となった。アメリカの大学・高等教育におけるリベラル・エデュケイションの歴史とその意味を解明するためには, 同協会の活動の分析が不可欠である。最終年度にあたる本年度は, 同協会の歴史がアメリカ大学史においてどのような意味と影響をもったのか, さらに, 特に同協会が2005年以降展開している「リベラル・エデュケイションとアメリカの約束」(LEAP)というプロジェクトが今後のアメリカの大学改革にどのような意味をもつのか, について総括的な検討・考察を行った。発足以来の約60年間, AACは, 大学をめぐるさまざまな社会的・政治的問題に積極的に関わってきた。たとえばアメリカ大学教授協会(American Association of University Professors : AAUP)などの団体と連携しながら, アカデミック・フリーダム擁護の問題にも強く関わった。しかしながら70年代半ば以降は, その活動の焦点を大学・カレッジにおけるリベラル・エデュケイションの改革に限定するようになった。団体としての社会的・政治的関心は弱まり, 特に21世紀に入ってからは, グローバル経済の発展にリベラル・エデュケイションがどのように寄与するのか, という経済的な関心を強めるようになっている。その典型がLEAPプロジェクトであり, 今後もその傾向が維持されると推測できる。
The purpose of this study is to examine the history of AAC&U (Association of American Colleges & Universities) which has been very influential in the ideas, systems, contents and methods of liberal education of undergraduate colleges in the Unites States for more than hundred years, and also aims to clarify the meaning and significance of AAC&U in the history of colleges and universities. AAC&U started as AAC (Association of American Colleges) which was originally established in 1915 with 160 member institutions and was changed the name in 1995. AAC&U now has 1,400 member including public and private colleges, community colleges, research universities, and comprehensive universities. To explore the history and its meaning of liberal education in the U.S., it is indispensable for an analysis of the activities of AAC&U. This year as the final stage of the project, I comprehensively examined the influence of AAC&U for history of American higher learning and the significance of the LEAP (Liberal Education and America's Promise) challenge launched in 2005 by the association for the reform of colleges and universities in the U.S.. Since its establishment in 1915, AAC had committed various social and political issues on colleges and universities for about sixty years. It had developed an interest in academic freedom and tenure and formulated statements by collaborating with AAUP (American Association of University Professors) in the former half of the twentieth century, for example. Since the mid-1970s, however, AAC had turned its attention to and concentrated on the reform of liberal education in colleges and universities, the association's concern for social and political problem became weaker. Consequently, in the twenty-first century AAC&U strengthened its interest in economic issues, in particular the contribution of liberal education to global economy. The LEAP challenge is a perfect example of it and this tendency would continue from now on.
