エリザベス朝の劇作家, 詩人ウィリアム・シェイクスピア(1564－1616)の作品は, 没後400年を経てなお, 世界各地で出版, 上演が重ねられているのみならず, 新しい世代のアーティストたちの創作活動に大きな影響を及ぼし続けている。才能あるアーティストたちが, 400年にわたって, シェイクスピアの作品と向き合ってきた歴史は, そのままイギリス文化史の重要な一部をなしているのである。本研究ではシェイクスピアが後の時代の文化, 芸術に与えた影響の諸相を, 19世紀初頭から20世紀のアーティストに特に注目して, 分析した。
2017年度には, 20世紀のイギリス桂冠詩人テッド・ヒューズの, きわめて個性的なシェイクスピア読解をめぐる論考'The Scar on the Face : Ted Hughes Reads Shakespeare's Sonnets'が, アーデン・シェイクスピア研究叢書の1冊, Hannah Crawforth, Elizabeth Scott-Baumann, and Clare Whitehead eds., The Sonnets : The State of Play (London : Bloomsbury Publishing, 2017) の一章として出版された。
現在は, 研究2年目にむけて, ロマン派の詩人Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworthのシェイクスピア読解に関する研究資料の収集と分析を進めている。
また2018年夏に開催予定のInternational Shakespeare Conferenceのセミナー'Media Wars in Shakespearean Age and Our Time'(コーディネーター, Professor Tianhu Hao, Zhejiang University)に参加を予定し, その準備としてErnst Lubitschのシェイクスピア受容をめぐるセミナーペーパーを執筆中である。
More than 400 years after the playwright's death, the plays of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) are still the mainstays of the stage all over the world,. Moreover, his dramatic, as well as poetic, works have exerted an powerful influence on generations of artists. This three-year research project explores Shakespeare's afterlives in the works of early 19th to 20th century artists, with special attention to their cultural contexts.
In academic year 2017, my article about former poet laureate Ted Hughes's idiosyncratic engagement with Shakespeare's Sonnets, entitled 'The Scar on the Face : Ted Hughes reads Shakespeare's Sonnets', was published in Hannah Crawforth, Elizabeth Scott-Baumann, and Clare Whitehead eds., The Sonnets : The State of Play (London : Bloomsbury Publishing, 2017).
I am currently collecting and analysing materials related to Romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth's interpretations of Shakespeare for the 2nd and 3rd years of this research project.
I am also participating in the seminar 'Media Wars in Shakespearean Age and Our Time' (Coordinator : Professor Tianhu Hao, Zhejiang University), at the International Shakespeare Conference in July 2018, and I am preparing a seminar paper about Ernst Lubitsch's comedic interpretation of Shakespeare's plays.
