本助成金は、拙書"Depression in Japan: Psychiatric Cures for a Society in Distress" (Princeton University Press, 2012) の韓国語版の刊行費用としていただいた。本書はアメリカ人類学会東アジア部門のFrancis Hsu 賞を受賞し、これまでに、日本語版、フランス語版、ペルシア語版が出され、一部の章は中国語にも訳されている。今回の韓国語版はアジアにおけるメンタルヘルスへの関心のさらなる高まりを示すものである。
韓国は、自殺率、うつ病有病率ともOECD1位を記録しており、統計庁の「2019年死亡原因統計」によると、1日平均37.8件の自殺が起きているという。自殺とうつ病の関連がいわれ、社会的介入が早急に求められるなかで、比較文化的視点を提供する本書に注目が集まったようである。
翻訳は、日本国立民族学博物館・助教のチェ・ソヒ先生によって企画され、チーム全体の監訳を韓国における自殺の専門家ソウル大学人類学科教授 イ・ヒョンジョン先生がご担当くださった。April Booksから2023年6月10日（電子版6月30日）出版され、6月27日現在すでに多くの韓国メディアに取り上げていただいている（以下参照）。朝鮮日報、YTN,ソウル経済、世界日報等でも報道されたようである。

The grant has been used for the Korean translation and publication of my English book: "Depression in Japan: Psychiatric Cures for a Society in Distress" (Princeton University Press, 2012). The book has received the American Anthropological Association's Francis Hsu Award, among other awards, and has been translated into Japanese, French, Persian, and parts of it into Chinese. The Korean translation suggests an increasing awareness of mental health issues in Asia more broadly.
Korea is known for its high rates of depression and suicide, and it was reported in 2020 that an average of 37.8 cases of suicide occur in one day. While the link between suicide and depression has been heatedly discussed, this book seems to have found a receptive audience who wish to understand the phenomena from a cross-cultural, comparative perspective.
The idea of translation was initially proposed by Korean anthropologist Prof. Sohee Che, and the translation team of 4 Korean scholars was overseen by Prof. Hyeon Jung Lee in the Department of Anthropology (and the Director of the Institute for Cross-Cultural Studies) at Seoul National University.
Since the book was published on June 10, 2023 (e-book on June 30, 2023), it has received numerous favorable reviews in the Korean media.
