2020年2月22日から3月4日までミャンマーへ渡航し、類人猿化石を産出しているマグウェー地域の現地調査と、ヤンゴンの考古局とザイカバー博物館における化石資料の分析調査を実施した。
現地調査は5日間にわたって実施し、新しい類人猿化石の発見には至らなかったものの、共伴する動物相のさらなる解明のための追加資料を得ることができた。化石踏査を実施した地点のうち、特にテビンガン地点では、ワニやカメの仲間など爬虫類化石だけでなく、ゾウ、ブタ、キリンの仲間などの哺乳類化石も採取され、共伴動物相に関する知見が充実した。
ヤンゴンでは、考古局において今回の調査で新たに採取された化石資料の整理・登録作業を行い、重要化石については模型作成のための型取りを実施した。また、すでに発見されている類人猿化石については断面形状データと照らし合わせた形態分析などを行った。ザイカバー博物館では既存コレクションの点検をし、類人猿の可能性のある大腿骨資料を発見したものの、帰国後の確認により食肉類のものであることが判明し、類人猿資料の追加には至らなかった。
I traveled to Myanmar from February 22 to March 4, 2020. I participated in the field survey through Magway area, central Myanmar, where several hominoid fossils have been found so far. I also visited Department of Archaeology and Zaykabar Museum in Yangon to study the fossil specimens.
The field survey in Magway area was conducted for five days. During that time we visited several sites around the area and collected many fossil specimens, although we couldn't find any additional hominoid specimen. Especially. at the site near Tebingan village, we found some mammalian fossils including those of proboscid, suid,and giraffid, along with the abundant reptilian fossils.
In Yangon, I worked with the team members at the Department of Archaeology to organize and register the newly found fossil specimens. Also I did analytical study of the existing hominoid fossil specimens. We also visited Zaykabar Museum and browsed through their existing collection. We found one hominoid-like specimen but later it turned out to be of some Carnivore.
