Mr. Keinosuke Tanaka, an intellectual Issei Japanese from Yamagata Prefecture, was an internee in his late fifties in the FBI detention camps and then subsequently sent to Poston relocation center during WWII. One of my acquaintances entrusted me with the introduction of his journal or memorandum, a lengthy but interesting one, to the academic community. It consists of transcriptions of a number of articles he found in periodicals and newspapers along with his impressions and thoughts. As the year of 2003 drew to a close, I attempted to trace his whole life and in a brief period of a couple of months managed to make contact with his three children, all of whom made a great success of their lives in the USA in spite of the terrible ordeal during WWII. The eldest son is Dr. John Tanaka, a renowned researcher in Chemistry, and his name is found in the EIC Hall of Fame as a prize winner in 1991. The only daughter is Mrs. Iris Fukutaki, who appreciated the value of Mr. Keinosuke Tanaka’s journals and decided to keep them. The youngest son is Mr. Tyler Tanaka, a very successful businessman and his name was inducted in 1997 in the Travel Hall of Fame. Fortunately I could meet Mr. Tyler Tanaka, accompanied by his daughter, Dr. Dian Tanaka and his younger son, Mr. Brian Tanaka, and Mrs. Iris Fukutaki, respectively in April and in October in 2004.
The journal that I keep at hand illustrates how much knowledge and information an internee, not in a special position, could gain even while being incarcerated in a camp. This article contains three excerpts from Mr. Keinosuke Tanaka’s journal.
Mr. Keinosuke Tanaka wrote this journal before Japanese orthography changed drastically after WWII. And besides, it was written in a small, skillful hand, which caused a great difficulty for me every now and then. I did my best to restore his sentences and also annotate them when necessary. I’d like to express my gratitude to Mrs. Masako Hanada, Miss Ryoko Matsuno, Miss Mitsuho Murata, Mrs. Tomi Gotoh, Mr. Kenji Tanaka, Mr. Akira Horiuchi (Japan), Mr. Hiroshi Kamei, Mrs. Teruko Sato, Mrs. Toshiko McCallum, and especially to Mr. Keinosuke Tanaka’s children ... Dr. John Tanaka, Mrs. Iris Fukutaki and Mr. Tyler Tanaka (U.S.).
