今年度も新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の影響が続いたため、当初の研究目標・手法の大幅な変更を余儀なくされた。それゆえ昨年度の研究の継続として、占領期の日本における白人(白人アメリカ人)をめぐる認識や受容の歴史に関する文献調査を行った。エドウィン・ダン記念館（札幌市、４月）、福岡県立図書館（福岡市、６月）、国立民族学博物館（吹田市、６月）、札幌市中央図書館（札幌市、８月）、京都大学附属図書館（京都市、１２月ならび２月）、沖縄県立図書館（那覇市、３月）などを訪れ、当時の一次資料を調査した。これらの資料的価値は高く、現在、白人性(whiteness)に関する学術論文執筆を行なっている。また、コロナ禍の渡航条件が緩和された時期を見計らって、１１月にはハーバード大学（米国マサチューセッツ州ケンブリッジ市）が所蔵する１９世紀の白人ナショナリスト団体に関する歴史資料の閲覧、３月にはハワイ大学（米国ハワイ州ホノルル市）が所蔵する１９世紀末の白人と先住民の関係に関する歴史資料の閲覧を行うことができた。これらの資料的価値は極めて高く、現在、米国のトップジャーナルへの投稿論文を執筆中である。本研究は来年度も助成をいただけることになったので、より渡航条件が緩和され次第、当初予定していたヒアリングを実施しつつ、日本国内における調査も同時に進め、より立体的に米国のオルトライトの世界的展開の理解を目指したい。白人ナショナリズムをめぐる動向はメディアの関心も高いが、センセーショナルな側面が強調されがちである。しかし、白人優位の考えとその裏返しとしての他者蔑視の眼差しを理解するうえでは、歴史的理解が不可欠である。コロナ禍そのものは研究にとって大きな障壁となったが、それまで軽視していた歴史的側面の理解が深まったという点では貴重な機会となった。
The continuing impact of the spread of the new coronavirus this fiscal year forced us to drastically change our original research goals and methods. Therefore, as a continuation of last year's research, we conducted a literature survey on the history of perception and acceptance of Caucasians (white Americans) in Japan during the occupation. We conducted a literature survey on the history of the perception and reception of Caucasians (white Americans) in Japan during the Occupation period at the Edwin Dunn Memorial Museum (Sapporo, April), Fukuoka Prefectural Library (Fukuoka, June), National Museum of Ethnology (Suita, June), Sapporo Central Library (Sapporo, August), Kyoto University Library (Kyoto, August), and the Kyoto University Library (Kyoto, August). (Naha City, March), and the Okinawa Prefectural Library (Naha City, March) to examine primary documents from that period. These materials are of great value, and I am currently writing an academic paper on whiteness. In November, he visited the 19th-century white nationalist collection of Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) to see when the travel conditions for the Corona Disaster were eased. In March, we were able to view historical materials related to groups, and in March, we were able to view historical materials related to the relationship between whites and indigenous people at the end of the 19th century, held by the University of Hawaii (Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A.). The value of these materials is extremely high, and we are currently writing a paper for submission to a top U.S. journal. As soon as the travel conditions are relaxed, we will conduct the originally planned interviews while simultaneously conducting research in Japan in order to gain a more three-dimensional understanding of the global development of the U.S. alt-right. The trends surrounding white nationalism are of great interest to the media, but the sensational aspect tends to be emphasized. However, historical understanding is essential in understanding the idea of white superiority and its flip side, the disdain for the other. Although the Corona disaster itself was a major barrier to my research, it was a valuable opportunity in that it deepened my understanding of a historical aspect that I had previously neglected.
