16世紀後半以降カトリック神学において確立していった「蓋然説」は、日本の宣教活動において、宣教師が、過去の事例では判断できないような行為の善悪の判断に迫られた際の、有力な神学的道標として機能しており、かつ、彼らの内的道徳的ジレンマに対する心理的な安寧としても機能していることが明らかになった。
また、期せずしてパリで存在が確認された日本イエズス会版『サントスの御作業』(1591)の分析の結果、同書に見られた書き込みが、レバント地方を含む東洋諸語との比較という視点を伴ってヨーロッパで日本語が研究された、非常に初期の例であることが確認された。
Probabilism, which had been established in Catholic theology since the late 16th century, functioned as a powerful theological bases of justification in the Catholic mission in Japan when missionaries were faced with judging the licitness of acts that could not be judged by existing ethical-theological standards. It also functioned as a psychological relief for their internal moral dilemmas.
An analysis of the third copy in the world of "Sanctos no gosagveo" or the Lives of Saints published by the Jesuit Mission press in Japan in 1591 confirmed that the handwriting found in the book was one of the earliest examples of Japanese being studied in Europe with comparative perspective with other Oriental languages in the Levant.
