スペイン領メキシコで取引されていた商品とその支払いに使われたモノを、主として商人が作成した帳簿に依拠することを目指した。
スペイン植民地研究において、商人の帳簿は、未活用の資料であるため、まず帳簿の収集をおこない、その研究法について模索した。それぞれのフォーマットについて研究した結果、フォーマットの地域や時代的なばらつきがあきらかになり、そのうち比較的フォーマットが類似するものを選んで、その内容のデータベース化を試みた。その結果、特定の有力商品を中心的に分析する従来のアプローチでは捨象されている、各種商品の小額の取引や、貨幣以外の支払いが総量としては無視できないことがわかった。
The research intends to analyse the means of payments and the goods traded in Spanish Mexico, relying mainly on the accounting records kept by merchants. 
Because such accounting books have not been conserved systematically and their importance is neglected by the Spanish colonial historians, the first step of this research consists in collecting these records dispersed widely in various archives. The second step is aimed at understanding the characteristics of the collected materials and establishing methods of analysis. This examination reveals the great divergence of their formats depending on their time periods and regions. For our convenience, we selected the records with relatively similar formats, so that we could extracted the homogeneous data. Finally, We analyse those data and find the importance of numerous products traded in small quantity and variety of payment methods used in such transactions.
