In this paper we first survey some important issues in anaphora and dynamic semantics with a brief outline of a recent dynamic semantic theory, Dynamic Update Anaphora Logic (DUAL) introduced by Keshet (2018) Second, we propose applying DUAL to two new examples: the substitution problem of identity statements and semantics of Japanese pronouns. It has been well known that anaphoric phenomena in natural language cause many difficulties for standard static semantics. First-generation dynamic semantic frameworks give very excellent solutions to them. However, dynamic semantics also has its own problems. Therefore, if we want to retain a kind of dynamic semantic approach, we need new solutions. DUAL is one of them. Here, we analyze specific linguistic data to support the method of DUAL, especially its use of update variables and compound variable terms. To begin with, focusing on Dynamic Predicate Logic (DPL), we give a quick overview of the problems about anaphora and dynamic semantics. Next, we introduce the concepts of DUAL at the minimum required. We then try to apply DUAL to
the famous identity statement puzzle by Frege and to the anaphoric problem of Japanese third person pronouns (“kare”/“kanojo”) embeddedin the scope of universal quantifiers. Finally, we discuss some philosophical aspects of DUAL.
