This study aimed to evaluate the effect of physical education classes on the physical inactivity time and life skills of 227 first-year students at Keio University in the 2020 fall semester. Physical education classes were briefly suspended in the 2020 spring semester due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and were later reinstated in the fall semester. The results of our study revealed the following:
1) Students displayed more physical activity outside of class during the fall semester than they did during the spring semester.
2) Irrespective of whether students were enrolled in physical education classes, their physical inactivity time was comparatively lower in the fall semester than in the spring semester.
3) The life skill scores of students who enrolled in physical education classes increased significantly compared to the scores of those who did not. This effect of the physical education classes was especially significant among students who did not belong to the athletic club.
4) There was no difference in the physical inactivity time and life skill scores among the students who were enrolled in the physical education classes.
