【目的】日本では，一般成人向け読書会が数多く開催されているにも関わらず，その性質は明らかにされていない。そこで本研究は，日本での一般成人向けの社会科学に関する読書会を研究対象として，読書会参加を左右する状況・条件や，参加者から見た読書会の持つ性質を明らかにする。参加者はどのように読書会を捉えているか，何が参加の動機ときっかけになっているのか，読書会で得られる実感はどのようなものか，読書会参加後にどのような帰結と影響にいたるのかを調査する。
【方法】読書会参加経験のある，年齢，性別，職業の多様な30代から60代の男女22名に半構造化インタビューを実施した。インタビュー結果をグラウンデッド・セオリーの手法を使用して分析し，9つのカテゴリからなる統合カテゴリ関連図を作成した。
【結果】読書会参加は，読書会に対する期待と，参加者自身の状況や読書スタイルに対する自己認識に左右される。読書会参加者が抱く読書会への期待は多様だが，読書会の持つ負担感が参加者を参加動機の強い人に絞り込む性質がある。参加者は，各々が持つ様々な動機に応じて読書会の選択・企画を行い，読書会に向けて課題本を読み，読書会に参加する。読書会で目的や動機の異なる参加者が集まって議論を行う際，課題本が多様な発言に共通項を持たせる性質がある。そして読書会には，参加者が読書会の持つ多様で自由な議論・発言から，自らの知識と結び付け気付き・発見を得るという性質がある。読書会の帰結として，多くは忘却にいたるものの，読書会で気付き・発見を得ることで，後の読書会に影響を与える場合がある。その際，読書会に対する評価にいたる場合，仕事や人脈形成といった他活動へ波及する場合，自己の内省にいたる場合が見られた。これらの帰結は，その後の読書会への期待や，読書会の選択・企画に影響を及ぼすことが確認された。
Purpose: Although numerous reading groups for adults exist in Japan, the nature of these groups requires clarification. This study focused on social science reading groups to clarify the circumstances and conditions that influence participation and the nature perceived by participants. Accordingly, we examined how participants view reading groups, what motivates and prompts participation, what types of feelings participation evokes, and what consequences and effects follow participation.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 men and women in their 30s to 60s. Grounded theory methods were used to analyze the interview results to create an integrated category relationship diagram of nine categories.
Results: Participants’ expectations, self-perception of their situation, and reading style influenced motivations. The expectations of reading group participants are diverse, but the load of the reading group can filter out participants with strong motivations to participate. When participants with different expectations and motives gather and discuss in a reading group, the book of interest can bring common ground among diverse comments. The reading group can make participants aware of connecting the information to the knowledge they previously had and obtain new insights from the diverse free discussions and comments among participants. Although many reading sessions may not prove meaningful, if participants experience a strong sense of realization, those reading sessions may influence later ones. To clarify, reading sessions may result in evaluating the reading session, utilization of their jobs or human networks, and introspection. We confirmed that these outcomes of reading sessions further raised expectations and selections for participants.
