| Abstract |
This study is a report on the practice of "dictionary lookup learning" using English dictionaries in first-year students at a public junior high school in Niigata City, Japan. The basic approach was to engage in a dictionary search (Jishobiki) in the first 10 minutes of class and keep a record of it, and other approaches were taken according to the student's needs.
The purpose of this study was to improve student's English language skills by helping activities according to "purpose, scene, and situation," which are necessary to develop "the ability to think, judge, and express" in terms of the three skills required in the Courses of Study.
This study has demonstrated that using the first 10 minutes of class to engage in continuous dictionary study is one of the solutions to the greatest challenges of English language learning in junior high schools, namely, motivating students to learn English and improving their English proficiency. However, there were also some challenges to be overcome.
