Abstract
In order to achieve communicative efficiency and adequacy, students should master not only a series of linguistics elements, but also cultural and social components. The aim of this study is to analyze the degree of occurrence of five speech acts, considered basic unit of linguistic communication, in three Spanish textbooks as a second language. The textbooks show their intention to integrate grammar and communication contents, focusing on the development of linguistic and communicative competence. In order to see whether the textbooks follow a pragmatic approach or not, the study consisted of analysing the occurrence of five functions of language representing five speech acts; as well as the kind of activities and didactic sequences that were carried out. The cultural component was also considered, whether it was integrated with the linguistic and communication objectives, or just offering general topics. The conclusion suggests that only one textbook presents didactic sequences that allow an appropriate learning of some of the speech acts, offering a valuable support to language teachers in their effort to take to the classroom a more pragmatic approach to language teaching.
