To develop the measurement of charge distribution of black carbon (BC) particles, we need to make 1) a laser alignment of the single-particle soot photometer (SP2), 2) a development of the flow system, and 3) a development of the instrument for separating the charged and non-charged particles.
The SP2 is an instrument for measuring the size-resolved BC mass concentration by the laser-induced incandescence technique. Alignment of the SP2 is essential to correctly detect BC particles and to measure their size distribution. In this year, I made an experiment to investigate if the shape of the laser is gaussian. We prepared the water suspension of polystyrene latex sphere (PSL) particles to be generated by using an atomizer. The emitted PSL particles are dried by passing through a diffusion dryer and introduced into the SP2. The optical axis of the SP2 was adjusted so that the histogram of the scattering signals emitted from the PSL particles is similar to a Gaussian distribution. I also developed a flow system by combining four electric ball valves and a super 4 USB 4ch relay. This system would enable to introduce the positively charged BC particles, non-charged BC particles, negatively charged BC particles, and all BC particles, separately, into the SP2.
