言語学的に信頼に足るポー・カレン語辞典を作成することが本研究の目標である。研究代表者がこれまに蒐集したポー・カレン語資料には大きく分けて、(a)フィールド調査で集めた民話の語りや日常会話等といった音声資料を発音記号で表記して電子データ化したもの、および、(b)エッセイ、短編小説、仏教説話などの文字資料を発音記号に置き換えて電子データ化したもの、の2種類が大量にある。これらのデータの中から一個ずつ単語を取り出して、各単語にポー・カレン文字表記、日本語訳、例文を付し、さらに、品詞、単語の古形、借用語の語源情報などの言語学的情報を付す作業を行った。品詞には、名詞、動詞、副詞、助詞、感嘆詞がある。
このようにして整理したデータを、母語話者の協力を得て確認し、修正していった。確認の内容は、(1)語彙項目の音形が正しいか否か、(2)語彙項目に付した意味が適切か否か、(3)例文が意味的・統語的に適切か否か、の主に3種類である。現在、カレン人の文化的中心地であるミャンマーへの渡航は難しいので、これらの作業を日本在住の母語話者(タイ国籍のカレン人)の協力を得て行った。加えて、これまで蒐集していない新たな語彙を集めるため、音声資料の書き起こしと文字資料の読解作業を並行して進めた。書き起こしと読解が正しいか否かの確認も、上述の母語話者の協力で随時行った。
以上のような作業の結果、ポー・カレン語の語彙約5,000項目を電子データ化することができた。また、こうして電子データ化した項目を、辞書作成ソフトとしてフィールド言語学者に定評のあるTshwaneDJe Software and Consulting社のプログラムTLexを用いて、見やすい形に整えていった。この作業は進行中であり、現在のところ約5分の1の語彙の入力作業を終えている。すべての語彙の入力を終えた段階で、研究代表者が塾内のサーバに設けている研究用ウェブサイトにおいて公開する。
The goal of this study is to compile a linguistically reliable dictionary of the Pwo Karen language. The Pwo Karen materials that I have collected so far can be divided into two main categories: (a) audio materials such as folk tales and daily conversations collected through field research, which have been converted into electronic data using phonetic symbols, and (b) written materials such as essays, short stories, and Buddhism treaties, which have been converted into electronic data by replacing Pwo Karen alphabets with phonetic symbols. I extracted words from these data one by one and attached to each word the Pwo Karen-alphabetical notation, Japanese translation, and example sentences, as well as linguistic information such as the part of speech, i.e. nouns, verbs, adverbs, particles, and interjections, archaic form of the word, and original form in the case of a loanword.
The data thus organized were checked and revised with the help of a native speaker. Three main kinds of checks were conducted: (1) whether or not the sound form of the lexical item is correct, (2) whether or not the meaning attached to the lexical item is appropriate, and (3) whether or not the example sentences are semantically/syntactically appropriate. Since it is currently difficult to travel to Myanmar, the cultural center of the Karen people, these tasks were carried out with the help of a native speaker from Thailand living in Japan. In addition, in order to collect new vocabulary that had not been collected previously, transcribing the audio materials and reading the written materials were conducted in parallel. The transcriptions and readings were also checked occasionally with the help of the native speaker.
As a result of the abovestated work, about 5,000 lexical items of Pwo Karen have been digitized into electronic data. The electronic data were then formatted into an easy-to-read format using TLex, a program from TshwaneDJe Software and Consulting, a well-known dictionary compiling software program among field linguists. This work is ongoing, and as of now about one-fifth of the vocabulary has been inputted. Once all the vocabulary has been entered, I will make it available on my research website.
