The project aims to build a multilingual "constructicon," that is, a network of related constructions, by linking grammatical constructions in Japanese with those in English, German, Swedish, Portuguese, and Chinese via frames (background knowledge).
Specifically, the project tries to demonstrate the validity of Frames-and-Constructions Analysis to search for corresponding constructions in typologically distinct languages such as Japanese and English.
In 2021 (Year 2) , 1) Frames-and-constructions Analysis of Japanese and English parallel corpora of spoken and written language was conducted. As for spoken data, transcripts of a TED talk were analyzed; as for written data, Japanese and English translations of a French novel were used. 2) Corresponding grammatical constructions of English and Japanese were identified.
Findings obtained this year are: 1) Corresponding constructions in Japanese and English are those that share the same function; and 2) Functions that are shared between Japanese and English include topicalization; presentational, imperatives; and questions.
Next steps include investigating other kinds of functions and exploring whether such functions can be described as frames.
