幕末明治初期に海外を訪れた日本人が、どのような問題意識を抱いて、情報収集を行ない、帰国後の活動に活かしたのかを、日英関係と教育という枠組みの中で、以下の3つの側面を中心に辿り、分析を行なった。
①福澤諭吉と民の啓蒙：『世界国尽』(1869)と初等教育における地理教育―日本とイギリスの初等教育や地理教育の特性を踏まえて論じた
②岩倉使節団の教育視察において、新島襄の果たした役割
③岩倉使節団本隊の行なった教育視察から浮かび上がる注目点

①については、2021年5月29日に福澤諭吉協会の記念講演で研究発表を行なう機会を与えられた。
①②③をまとめ、2021年度内に法学研究会叢書を刊行する予定だったが、岩倉使節団のイギリス滞在に大きく関わった、イギリスのパークス駐日公使関連の新たな発見があり、軌道修正が必要となった。そのため、刊行が2022年秋にずれ込む予定である。尚、『日英関係史に見る「学びの風景」－福澤諭吉・新島襄・久米邦武－』は仮題であり、変更される可能性がある。
The research project focused on (a) how the Japanese observed and analyzed the Victorian society and education during their visits to Britain in the mid-nineteenth century, and (b) how their new knowledge and analyses influenced their activities after their return to Japan. The three central topics of the project are as follows:
(1) Fukuzawa Yukichi and the enlightenment of the people: the characteristics of the elementary geography education in Japan and Britain, and the significance of Fukuzawa's geography textbook, All the Countries around the World (1869), are discussed.
(2) The role of Niijima Jo in the education inspection by the Iwakura Mission (survey team led by Tanaka Fujimaro).
(3) The education inspection by the main members of the Iwakura Mission and the influence of the Anglo-Japanese diplomatic relations.

I gave a commemorative lecture on (1) on May 29th, 2021, at the Fukuzawa Yukichi Society. I am also in the process of publishing a book combining (1)(2)(3). (Scheduled to be published in the autumn 2022.)
