『自由の条件』は、戦後のハイエク政治経済思想の一頂点をなす著作である。しかしながら、わたくしのみるところ、まだその標準的な読解というものは提示されていないと考えている。たしかに、ハイエクは、特定の政治的イデオロギーと関連した形ではなく、自由に論じられるようになり、さまざまな書物が刊行されるようになった。刊行物の増えかたは著増というに憚らないくらいの増大であり、いまや刊行されるすべての文献に目を通すことすら不可能になった。私のかすかな疑念は、すべての研究者のハイエク読解がかならずしも適切ではない、ということである。読みは最終的には自由だといっても、あまりに自由な読解に接しては、困惑するばかりである。そこで、戦後ハイエクの代表作と考えられる『自由の条件』にかんして、その基本書とでもいうべきものが必要なのではないかと、考えるに至った。今般の補助によって、いくつかの章についてはコメンタリーを施すことができた。今後も、大著といってよい本書の標準的な解釈を示すべく、作業を継続する予定である。最終的には一書としてまとめ、『ハイエク自由の条件を読む』(仮題)などのタイトルで公刊する予定である。いままで、精粗はあるが、つぎの章についてのコメンタリーは一応完成している。第1章、第6章、第7章、第8章、第15章、第16章、第18章、第20章、第21章。今後も手付かずの章についてのコメンタリーをものすことに力を注ぎたい。
"The Constitution of Liberty" is the culmination of Hayek's postwar political and economic thought. However, a standard reading of the book has yet been presented. Indeed, Hayek's work has been freely discussed in a variety of ways, not in association with any particular political ideology. The number of publications has increased to such a degree that it is now impossible to read everything that has been published. My faint suspicion is that not all researchers' reading of Hayek is necessarily adequate. It is true enough that one is ultimately free to read the work in his (her) own way, but it is bewildering to encounter so many readings, not necessarily well-founded. We need a basic book on "The Constitution of Liberty". This financial assistence enables me to provide commentaries on some of the chapters. I intend to continue my work to provide a standard interpretation of this major work. Finally, I plan to publish the final version as a book, tentatively titled "Reading Hayek's Constitution of Liberty". So far, I have completed my commentaries on the following chapters, though they are far from being perfect: chapters 1, 6, 7, 8, 15, 16, 18, 20, and 21. I will continue to focus on making commentaries on other chapters as well.
