本研究プロジェクト「文化を問い直す－－芸術（論）の視点から」は、研究代表者の平田栄一朗と共同研究者の北川千香子が２０１７年から２０２０年にかけて行った科研費プロジェクト「越境文化演劇研究」の成果を２０２０年度中に書籍で公表することを目指した。この出版企画に研究代表者と共同研究者を含めた計９名の研究者が論文を執筆し、２０２１年1月に彩流社から『文化を問い直す――舞台芸術の視座から』（合計２７０頁）を出版した。本論文集は、芸術作品には「かのように」という虚構世界を通じて、私たちの文化的意識を問い直し、その意識に潜む誤謬や偏見といった負の側面をみずから検証する機会があることを明らかにした。各執筆者は日欧の現代演劇、古典演劇、朗読パフォーマンスなどの作品を具体例として、私たちが「これは自明のことだ」と思う意識のあり方を独自に考察し、自明性の自覚が私たちをかえって不自由にする状況から脱して、自由かつ開放的な文化の発展に寄与する考え方を導き出した。

The research project, "Questioning Culture: Perspectives from the Performing Arts", aims to publish the results of "Research on Transcultural Theatre" which Prof. Dr. Eiichiro Hirata and Associate Prof. Dr. Chikako Kitagawa conducted from 2017 to 2020, supported by the Grant-in-Aid for Japanese Society for Promotion of Science. Including papers contributed from other six researchers, Hirata and Kitagawa edited and published the book Questioning Culture—From the Perspective of Performing Arts (published from Sairyusha Publisher in January 2021). The papers attempt to clarify the significance of artworks which confront recipients with their own cultural consciousness that is mostly based on their unconscious belief in culture and tradition. Through the confrontation, the recipients can examine the way how their cultural consciousness often function without logically and/or historically convincing reasonings. Taking Japanese and European contemporary and classical theatre as concrete examples, the authors investigate the problems that lie behind cultural consciousness that we tend to take for self-evident, and suggest the ways of thinking that would contribute to develop a freer and more open multiculture, attracting and integrating people from different cultural backgrounds and orientations.
