本年度は中期のウルフに焦点を合わせ、戦間期と呼ばれる第一次世界大戦後の1920年代のイギリスの文化的歴史的観点から、ハイ・モダニズムについて検証した。具体的には、『ジェイコブの部屋』(1922)、『ダロウェイ夫人』(1925)、『灯台へ』(1927)、『オーランドー』(1928)といったウルフの最盛期のテクストを精読していくとともに、その歴史的、文化的なコンテクストに目を向けていった。この１年間の研究で明らかになっていったのは、ウルフのテクストが同時代のヨーロッパやアジアの文学の翻訳作品と興味深いインターテクスト性を結んでいるということだった。
とりわけマルセル・プルーストの『失われた時を求めて』は重要な接点であることがわかった。ウルフが上述の一連のテクストを生み出していった時期は、ちょうどこのフランス文学の作品がイギリスの翻訳者スコット・モンクリフによって英訳されていく時期と重なり合う。ウルフとプルーストは、「記憶」というモダニズム文学に主要なテーマのみならず、「文体的な実験」においても、問題意識を共有していたことが、これまでの比較文学の研究から明らかになっているが、私がとりわけ関心を抱いたのは、両者の接近が「翻訳」を通じてなされたという可能性である。
こうした問題意識から「プルーストと世界文学」というオンライン・シンポジウムを企画し、プルーストが翻訳を通じて、どのように世界各地で受容されていったのか、という問題の検証を行った。私はスコット・モンクリフという翻訳者が、プルーストの翻訳を、いわば自身の「翻訳の詩学」というもののために、イギリスの文脈で大胆に翻訳していく過程に目を向けた。プルーストのフランス語のタイトルをRemembrance of Things Pastと訳したのは、シェイクスピアのソネットへのオマージュを取り入れるためであるとともに、第一次世界大戦の死者の追悼という意味合いを帯びていたのだ。
My focus this year was put on the middle stage of Virginia Woolf, exploring so-called high modernism in terms of the historic, cultural contexts of the interwar period. Especially the 1920s was the most productive period for Woolf: Her works include Jacob's Room (1922), Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Orlando (1928). I examined these texts in relation to the cultural, political contexts of interwar Britain. My discovery was that Woolf's texts could be put alongside the works of translations, those literary works translated from Europe and Asia.
A case in point was Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. The period in which Woolf produced the above-mentioned modernist texts coincided with the period in which Scott Moncrieff translated Proust's masterpiece into English. Comparative literature revealed that Woolf and Proust shared not only their keen interests in memory, but also their devotion to stylistic innovations. However, I realized the possibility that what brought them together was nothing other than translation.
Thus, I decided to organize the online symposium: Proust and World Literature, in order to examine the ways in which Proust was accepted around the world through multiple translations. My paper explored how the English translator, Scott Moncrieff, translated Proust into English for his own aesthetics of translation, boldly interpreting him in the context of interwar Britain. One classic example was the English title Remembrance of Things Past: The title was not only an allusion to Shakespeare's sonnet, but also a reference to the casualties of the First World War.
