交詢社は、1880年1月に福澤諭吉によって創設された社交倶楽部である。交詢社は、当時の知識人の集まりで、そこに集う知識人が闊達な議論を展開していた。しかし、交詢社は、会員である知識人のための倶楽部というにとどまらず、会員以外の人々への啓蒙活動もしていた。そのひとつの活動が、演説会であった。当初は、交詢社の会員が私的に講演会を行っていたが、それが盛況であったために、交詢社も1880年10月から演説会を開催するようになった。交詢社は地方に組織を拡大すべく、巡回委員を派遣し、支社を創っていくが、演説会も東京だけでなく、地方で行われるようになってくる。交詢社の演説会は、最初は政談講演が多かったが、徐々に政談講演から学術講演へと変化していくことになる。
この研究では、地方新聞を用いて、地方における巡回講演の実態を明らかにすることが目指されたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行により、地方での調査が難しくなってしまったために、調査研究ではなく、文献研究に切り替えて、研究を行った。主な研究としては、交詢社の機関誌である『交詢雑誌』の初期のものを収集し、交詢社の会員の動向を把握し、さらにそこに掲載された論考の分析を行った。また、福澤諭吉の思想と交詢社の社会教育と活動がどのようにつながっているかを検討した。福澤は交詢社設立以前にも明六社の設立に関わっており、知識人が交際し、異見を交換し、それを雑誌で発信するという仕組みは、両社に共通していた。しかし、交詢社では、三田演説会の発会を経て、民衆に対して直接に働きかけるという手法が加わっている。そして、それが後に慶應義塾の地方巡回講演にも活かされていることを、『慶應義塾学報』などの雑誌で確認することができた。
実証的な調査ではなく、思想史的なアプローチをすることで、交詢社および慶應義塾の社会教育活動の意味を再確認することができた。
Kojunsha is a social club founded by Yukichi Fukuzawa in January 1880. Kojunsha was a gathering of intellectuals at that time, and the intellectuals gathered there were engaged in open discussions. However, Kojunsha was not only a club for intellectuals who are members, but also conducted educational activities for people other than members. One of the activities was a speech. Initially, the members of Kojunsha gave lectures privately, but due to the success of the lectures, Kojunsha began to hold speeches from October 1880. Kojunsha dispatched tour committee members to create branch offices in order to expand the organization to rural areas, but speech meetings were held not only in Tokyo but also in rural areas. At first, there were many political talks at Kojunsha's speeches, but it would gradually change from political talks to academic lectures.
In this study, the aim was to clarify the actual situation of lecture tour in rural areas using local newspapers, but the epidemic of the new coronavirus infection made it difficult to investigate in rural areas. Instead, I switched to literature research. The main research was to collect the early ones of the magazine "Kojun Zasshi", which is the organ of Kojunsha, to grasp the movements of the members of Kojunsha, and to analyze the articles published there. We also examined how the thought of Yukichi Fukuzawa and the activities of social education in Kojunsha are linked. Fukuzawa was involved in the establishment of Meirokusha even before the establishment of Kojunsha, and the mechanism of intellectuals gathering, exchanging views, and publishing it in magazines was common to both. However, at Kojunsha, a method of working directly with the people had been added after the Mita Enzetsukai was launched. Then, I confirmed in magazines such as "Keio Gijuku Gakuho" that it was later utilized in the Keio Gijuku regional lecture tours.
By taking an intellectual history approach rather than an empirical survey, I was able to reconfirm the meanings of social education activities at Kojunsha and Keio University.
