2019年度には2つのWeb調査を行った。調査A（交通事故慰謝料調査）では、交通事故による死亡時に被害者に対して払われるべき慰謝料について、「民事交通事故訴訟損害賠償算定基準 2019 年度版」等において慰謝料計算にあてる典型例として紹介される2事例（40代男性被害者ならびに70代女性被害者）について、クラウドソーシングを用いて一般市民を対象に、適切と考える慰謝料金額をたずねた。その結果、40代男性被害者への慰謝料をより高く回答するなど、実際の裁判所判断と類似した傾向が見られた。他方で、質問文で例として示した数字に回答が影響される係留効果（anchoring effect）が見られ、さらにそれが、現実に裁判所が示した慰謝料額への妥当性判断に影響を与えることが示された。社会心理学で知られてきた係留効果が、一般市民の判例評価に影響を与えることが示唆された。2020年度には自己追試を行った上で、異なる判例を用いた検証も進める。
調査Bは、2019年末から広がったCOVID-19の機会を捉え、非常時における国家と人権の関係について、人々の意識を調べるための調査を、日、米、英、伊でクラウドソーシングにより行った。調査は3月末に行いまだ分析途上であるが、市民の「自警」による権利への制限（外出禁止など）に、国による違いが示唆されている。2020年度、COVID-19の終息後に追跡調査を行う予定である。
これらの調査の他、代表者の平石は、進化心理学から一般市民の社会ルール理解を分析したCosmides et al (2009)の追試について人間行動進化学会第31回大会（ボストン大学）で報告した。共同研究者のOrtolaniは日伊比較法研究会第４回隔年研究大会（立命館大学）の座長を務め、パヴィア大学で開催された国際シンポジウムで日本の2017年の民法改正において比較法が与えた影響について報告した。
We conducted 2 surveys in 2019. In Survey A, we studied laypersons' estimation of the "appropriate" amount of compensation for death by traffic accidents. Participants read one of two deadly traffic accident cases compiled in the "Civil Traffic Accident Litigation Damage Calculation Standards 2019 Edition" and reported how much compensation they thought was appropriate. One case involved a male in his 40s as the victim, while the other involved a female in her 70s. It was found that the estimated compensation was higher for the men in the 40s than for women in the 70s. In addition, we found a so-called anchoring effect on the estimation. Those participants who were presented with larger figures in the question text gave a larger estimation. Furthermore, they were more likely to show dissatisfaction with the actual compensation decided by the court. In FY2020, we will conduct a self-replication of the results and test the generalizability of the findings by employing other cases.
Survey B seized the opportunity of the COVID-19 pandemics at the end of 2019 and conducted an online crowdsourcing survey in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy, to examine people's disgust sensitivity towards possibly pathogen contaminated objects. Also, we studied people's attitudes toward foreign people and toward restriction on human rights as the Behavioral Immune System hypothesis predicts associations between disgust sensitivity and xenophobic attitude. The survey was undertaken at the end of March and is still under analysis. A follow-up survey will be conducted in FY2020, at a different stage of the COVID-19 pandemics.
In addition to the surveys, Kai Hiraishi conducted and reported a direct replication of Cosmides et al. (2009), a famous and widely cited study that examined people's understanding of social law from evolutionary psychology, at an international conference. Andrea Ortolani chaired a session at the Biennial Conference of the Italian-Japanese Association for Comparative Law. He also gave a talk on the influences of foreign and comparative law on the reform of the Civil Code (law of obligations) in Japan at a large international symposium on Japanese law.
