Abstract |
The theme of the project is the slave trade network among Spain, Cuba and Africa during the 19th Century. Based on primary sources such as memoirs by slave ship pilots, British court documents, and Spanish official record, I have revealed some distinctive features of the trans-Atlantic slve trade, which was being phased out under the strong abolition movement.Spain tried to continue an illegal slave trade using its African colony(Fernando Poo) as a secret transit point. And the colony later became a new forwar base for Spain's imperial adventures (for example, by Claretians)after it had lost Cuba in the Spanish-American War. The project is free from the traditional framework of national histories, and, reflecting a recent trend in global history, it focuses on social groups and their migration between Africa and the Caribbean. A special place of Spain's african colony has come to light in this new approach.
