マルセル・プルーストの作品において、鳥のテーマはきわめて重要かつ遍在的であるにも関わらず、これまで行われてきた研究は断片的なものにとどまっていた。本研究では、初期作品から『失われた時を求めて』まで、プルーストの作品における鳥のテーマを網羅的に分析することで、プルーストの美学の一端を浮き彫りにすることを目指した。
プルーストに多大な影響を与えた作家であるピエール・ロティ、アンナ・ド・ノアイユ、ジョン・ラスキンの作品における鳥の描写が、プルーストに与えた影響について検討した。その結果、これまで明らかになっていなかった細部の読解が可能になった。とりわけ、ラスキンがプルーストにもたらした影響について新たな光をもたらすことができた。この点は今後更に掘り下げる必要があるため、次年度以降において発展させるべきテーマである。この研究の成果は、2019年3月に発表された研究論文「鳩からアルキュオネまでーマルセル・プルーストの作品における鳥ー」にまとめられている。
2018年10月には、慶應義塾大学日吉キャンパスで、「鳥たちのフランス文学」と題したシンポジウムを主催した。18世紀から20世紀フランス文学を研究する7名が、各人が専門とする作家における鳥のテーマについて発表を行った。ここでは、「プルーストの鳥類学」と題した発表を行い、プルーストの作品における鳥のメタファーの独自性について詳細な分析を行った。
幅広い作家における鳥の表象を扱う本シンポジウムでは、文学と自然科学のつながりについて新たな知見をもたらすことができた。文学研究者だけでなく鳥類学者とも活発な質疑応答がなされ、文系・理系の枠組をこえた豊かな知的交流につながる催しだった。
The theme of birds in the works of Marcel Proust has not been sufficiently explored despite its importance. I attempted to clarify Proust's aesthetics by examining this theme in In Search of Lost Time as well as in his early works. I examined the theme of birds in the works of Pierre Loti, Anna de Noailles and John Ruskin, and their possible influences on Proust. A comparative reading with Ruskin around the theme opened a new and convincing interpretation of some enigmatic sentences in In Search of Lost Time. In March 2019, I published this interpretation in the article "Birds in the work of Marcel Proust". This theme will open up a new topic that I will continue to explore next year. In October 2018, I organized the symposium "Literature according to birds", which brought together seven researchers, all specialists in French literature. Each gave a presentation on the theme of birds in writers of the 18th to 20th century. I made a communication entitled "Marcel Proust's ornithology", analyzing the metaphor of birds in the works of Proust. This conference allowed several discussions between specialists of the different authors, and also exchanges with the researchers in literature and ornithologists.
