The purpose of this research is to study a relationship between the symmetry of compact Riemann surfaces and the eta-invariant of 3-manifolds. More precisely, we try to characterize the reducibility of an automorphism of a Riemann surface by the vanishing of the eta-invariant. To this end, we focus on a compact Riemann surface which has the Hurwitz group as an automorphism group.
The mapping class group of a closed surface is well studied not only in topology but also in complex analysis or algebraic geometry. In recent years, to reach more deep understanding, the interaction among them rapidly goes on. Nielsen-Thurston theory tells us the mapping classes are classified into three types of mappings: 1. periodic, 2. reducible, 3. pseudo-Anosov. As is well known, there are some overlap between 1. and 2. In this research, we tried to describe the reducibility of periodic automorphisms in terms of the vanishing of the eta-invariant (spectral asymmetry). Actually we handled Hurwitz surfaces (its automorphism group can be regarded as a subgroup of the mapping class group), which are known to have the highest symmetry in each genus, and tried to make a wide framework for characterizing the reducibility in terms of the eta-invariant.
For the above purpose, we showed that every automorphism of the Hurwitz surface which has the alternating group A(n) as an automorphism group is reducible. Moreover, we showed that the eta-invariant vanishes for the alternating group A(15) which is the smallest one in the simple Hurwitz alternating groups.
