本年度の主たる研究成果としては、①報告「Whose Enlightenment? Which Hume? 最近の啓蒙思想研究・ヒューム研究を踏まえて」、②論文"'Voilà un siècle de lumières!' Horace Walpole and the Hume–Rousseau Affair"がある。
①「Whose Enlightenment? Which Hume? 最近の啓蒙思想研究・ヒューム研究を踏まえて」は、2018年10月12日に東京大学（駒場キャンパス）で開催されたミニシンポジウム「デイヴィッド・ヒュームと啓蒙の諸問題：哲学・歴史・対話」における報告である。本報告では、近年の啓蒙思想研究を踏まえ、英仏啓蒙思想というより広いコンテクストの中で、デイヴィッド・ヒューム、ジャン＝ジャック・ルソー、ホレス・ウォルポールらの議論を参照しながら、多層的な啓蒙思想像を描き出す必要性を示した。最近の研究では、啓蒙＝近代とする非歴史的な概念規定が見られるが、18世紀の思想家たち自身の同時代的考察として啓蒙という現象を歴史的に解明しなければならない。その際に鍵となるのが、通俗的な解釈では対極的な文明観を持っているとされるヒュームとルソーの比較考察である、というのが本報告の趣旨である。
②"'Voilà un siècle de lumières!' Horace Walpole and the Hume–Rousseau Affair"は、上記報告を踏まえつつ、文学者ホレス・ウォルポールの中にルソー的啓蒙批判を析出する、という試みである。ウォルポールは、ヒュームによって英国へ移ったルソーを批判する諷刺文を書くことで、ヒュームとルソーの仲違いに重要な役割を果たした。だが、ウォルポールの諷刺文や、ヒュームとの関係、当時の多くの知識人たちと交わした膨大な書簡を読み解くことで、ウォルポールの意図はむしろルソーに近く、反啓蒙の立場に立っていることが分かった。本論文は、2019年度中に公刊予定のHistory of European Ideas誌のヒューム特集号に掲載される。
The research outcomes are (1) a presentation in the symposium "Whose Enlightenment? Which Hume?: Introducing the Latest Studies in Hume and Enlightenment Thought," and (2) an article "'Voilà un siècle de lumières!' Horace Walpole and the Hume–Rousseau Affair."
(1) is a presentation in the symposium "David Hume and the Problems of Enlightenment: Philosophy, History, and Literature" held in the University of Tokyo (Komaba Campus) on October 12th 2018. The aim of this presentation is to underline the multi-layered understandings of the Enlightenment as a historical phenomenon. Based on the latest studies in the Enlightenment, this presentation refers to the discussions of David Hume, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Horace Walpole. In recent studies, scholars tend to naively define the Enlightenment as the modernity per se. However, the Enlightenment as a historical phenomenon should be considered as contemporary understandings of various 18th century philosophers on their own time. A comparative study of Hume and Rousseau might be useful for this purpose, not despite, but because they have often been considered to have opposite views of civilization.
The aim of (2) is to demonstrate the counter-Enlightenment attitudes in Horace Walpole's letters. The name of Walpole has been recorded as "a man of letters" who wrote a satire to criticize Rousseau. This satire finally triggered the personal rupture between Hume and Rousseau. However, a close reading of his satire and his letters reveals that Horace Walpole was rather sympathetic to Rousseauean counter-Enlightenment view. This article is going to be published in a special issue of the History of European Ideas.
