Since the year 2010, several instructors have become interested in successful cases related to a new generation of language learning projects being implemented in French language learning throughout Japan. One interesting example includes a project based learning known as, "Hirosaki X France" conducted at the University of Hirosaki (2015-). Another project that is developing interest is the Short Video series, "Tokai Nouvelle vague" developed by Tokai University (2016-2017). Both projects share a number of similar characteristics. For example, the creation of a learning community, combined with the introduction of innovative techniques designed to promote student motivation. One key aspect that may be directly associated with the success of these projects is strategic thinking on the part of instructors. As part of my research, I conducted fieldwork in three locations and was given opportunities to observe classes as well as conduct interviews with teachers and students. Following is a detailed list of fieldwork conducted during academic year 2018.
・Attending the presentation: possibilities of a RPG type textbook in a French class, given by professor Nobuaki KOREMURA (Tokai University) and professor Yosuke FUKAI (Tohoku University), as part of the Rencontres pédagogiques du Kansai, a session conducted once a month. Dates when I attended: November 11, 2018. Location: Osaka Sangyo University, Osaka Umeda satellite campus.
・Fieldwork conducted at Kindai University: class observation of Basic French class, taught by professor Azusa TAKAHASHI. In addition of being allowed to attend his seminar, I conducted interviews with teacher and students, Dates: November 12 - 13, 2018.
・Fieldwork conducted at Tokai University: class observation of French language classes taught by professor Nobuaki KOREMURA et al. The observation was followed by interviews with teacher and students.
Dates: December 17 - 18, 2018.
・Fieldwork conducted at University of Hirosaki: class observation of a project based class (Hirosaki X France), taught by professor Makiko KUMANO, interviews. February 7-9, 2019.
Observation and results
In all cases, it became evident that strong leadership - very often provided by instructors well versed in the ideology of each respective project was conducive to creating classroom situations in which the instructor could incorporate innovation and personalized teaching, rather than relying on general teaching. Evidence of the success of this approach could be seen in students' continuous engagement throughout the classes.
Interviews with instructors revealed that, on the other hand, from the point of view of sustainability of such projects and activities, it is difficult to replicate the same classroom environment in same spirit, particularly when both, students and instructors have developed a strong sense of involvement and agency as equal participants.
As a future assignment, I plan to continue conducting fieldwork at Tohoku University, thanks to an invitation by Professor Fukai, who has left Tokai University. Professor Fukai has expressed interest in conducting several projects at a larger international scale. Finally, I am planning to give a presentation on my research findings at the FIPF (International Federation of French Teachers / Fédération Internationale des Professeurs de français) at the annual conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in September of 2019.
