本研究の出発点は、ゲーテが自らのきわめて多様な学問的および芸術的活動をヨーロッパの全文明史の中で見つめ、ひとつの統一体と考えていたことであった。すなわち、ホメロスやウェルギリウスの叙事詩、古代ギリシャ悲劇、ダンテの『神曲』から各時代の流行歌や民謡に至るまで、あらゆる物語と歌による表現をひとつの生命体の活動をとらえ、近代的な散文的文学および学知に対する批判的視点を描き出して見せた。本研究においても、一方ではあらためて古典古代における叙事詩やドラマのありようと意義を探求し考察するとともに、他方では音楽と言葉（詩）の結びつきについても多角度から探求を行なった。報告者は、本学アート・センター、油井正一アーカイヴにおいてはポピュラー音楽史の資料構築および研究を行なっているが、本研究においても20世紀のジャズをはじめとするポピュラー音楽は重要な要素であった。ゲーテがその芸術と学知において行った近代批判に対応する音楽は、近代のシステムを色濃く反映したクラシック音楽よりは、むしろより奔放なリズムを持ち、より多彩なシチュエーションで聴かれ、より身体性と結びついたポピュラー音楽であった。報告者は、ゲーテの学問理論についての従来の研究を継続するとともに、ゲーテの強い影響のもとで仕事を行った20世紀ドイツの音楽評論家ヨアヒム・ベーレントの音楽論も参照しながら、作曲家村井邦彦氏、ジャズピアニスト山下洋輔氏、さらにドイツのフリージャズ・ピアニスト・アレクサンダー・フォン・シュリッペンバッハ氏らの講演会を開催した。これらの活動を通して、「近代以降」の音楽の諸相について考察するとともに、そうした音楽的活動がどのような思想的および社会的広がりを持つものか、様々な文脈において考察を行った。
The starting point of this study was that Goethe viewed his very diverse academic and artistic activities in the history of all civilizations in Europe as a unity. So, from the epic of Homer and Virgil, the ancient Greek tragedy, Dante's "La Divina Commedia" to popular songs and folk songs from every period, Goethe worked on every expression by a song and a story as an activity of one life form. I drew out a critical perspective on literature and science a modern prose. Also in this research, while exploring the meaning of epic poems and dramas in classical antiquity on the one hand, and on the other hand we also explored the connection between music and words (poems) from multiple angles. This researcher has been constructing materials and researching popular music history in the Keio University Art Center, Shoichi Yui Archive, but popular music such as 20th century jazz was an important element in this research as well. The music, that corresponds to the modern criticism that Goethe did on arts and science, is popular music, which has more liberal rhythm and is heard in a wider variety of situations than classical music that strongly reflects the modern system of thoughts. This reseacher continued the conventional work on Goethe's theory of science, and also worked on popular music, referring to the music theory of the german music critic Joachim Behrend who worked under Goethe's strong influence. Composer Kunihiko Murai, jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita, and German free jazz pianist Alexander von Schrippenbach gave lectures for my project. Through these activities, we examined various aspects of "modern" music, as well as various philosophical and social spreads of such musical activities.
