Abstract
An analytical solution which neglects the viscous effects is obtained for the pressure rise occuring in a tapered pipe when the flow is stopped by the quick closure of a valve. It is shown that the pressure rise is given by a function of the radius ratio; (the radius at the valve end/the radius at the opposite end).
Moreover the effect of viscosity on the peak pressure value is investigated numerically by the method of characteristics.
