新型コロナウイルスの感染により、本研究課題は当初の計画を大きく変更せざるを得なかったが、我々の過去の研究を生かし、思わぬ形で本研究課題の解決に寄与することができた。2020年の春から夏にかけては多くの学校でオンライン授業となり、プールでの水泳授業は実施されなかった。また、自由時間の活動も三密回避のために制限され、公設プールの休業、海水浴場が開設されないといったような状況もあり、涼を求め密を避けたため、子供たちは川での水遊びに出かけた。その結果、例年に比べて川での水難事故が多く発生していた。川での水難事故の特徴としては、水着状態ではなく着衣状態であることが指摘されている。このような状況において、奇しくも我々の研究テーマである「水難事故を防止するための新たな安全水泳教育カリキュラムの構築」に脚光が当たることとなった。我々のこれまでの研究結果から、水難事故時に想定される着衣状態での水泳に対しては、映像を用いたイメージトレーニングが有効であることが分かっている。そこで、新型コロナウイルスの感染により、水泳授業を行えない児童を対象として、見ることで学べる水難事故防止教材を作成した。この結果を2020年8月11日に「ウィズ・アフターコロナ時代に必要な先進的安全水泳教育の紹介」という題目でプレスリリースを発行した。これに対し、『「水難事故防止用教材」を作成』という見出しで日本教育新聞社に取り上げられた。内容としては、多くの小中学校でプールでの水泳授業の中止したことを受けて、映像を見るだけで水難事故防止に役立つ技術の紹介というものであった。ただし、イメージトレーニングは映像を見るだけでは効果は期待できず、実際にその場にいる（今回の場合は服を着た状態で足の着かない深い川や海などにいる）ことを強くイメージした上で動画を見る必要があることである。このための事前準備などが必要となることを注記する。
Due to the infection with the COVID-19, this research project had to change the original plan, but we were able to contribute to the solution of this research project in an unexpected way by making use of our past research. From spring to summer of 2020, many schools had online lessons and no swimming lessons in the pool. In addition, free time activities were also restricted to avoid crowds, public pools were closed, beaches were not opened, so many children went out to play in the river to avoid crowds. As a result, more water accidents occurred in the river than usual. It has been pointed out that the characteristic of water accidents in rivers is that they are not in swimsuits but in clothes. From the results of our past research, it is clear that image training using movies is effective for swimming in clothes state that is expected in the event of a water accident. Therefore, we created a water safe movie that can be learned by children who cannot take swimming lessons due to infection with the COVID-19.
