18世紀後半～19世紀前半にかけて, 多くのギリシャ商人がオスマン帝国からイギリス東インド会社統治下のベンガルに移住し, とりわけそのフロンティアである東部を拠点とした。本稿では, 政府専売下の塩取引を中心にギリシャ商人の活動を分析し, 商業的成功と商業からの撤退を明らかにする。かれらの盛衰は, 東インド会社統治下の経済・社会の変化自体を示すとともに, 東インド会社の統治形態のあり方を規定するものでもあった。
This study explores Greek merchants' activities in late 18th and early 19th century Bengal. They mainly migrated from Thrace under the control of the Ottoman Empire and advanced eastward, establishing a strong commercial base in the frontier districts of eastern Bengal. Their commercial success, particularly through the salt trade under the monopoly of the English East India Company (EIC), and withdrawal from commerce in later years from the 1830s reflect the socioeconomic transformation of early colonial Bengal. Simultaneously, their activities and complex relations with the EIC officials largely influenced the EIC's governance over the colonial society.
