A number of European travellers visited Bengal in the sixteenth to the eighteenth century and left behind valuable accounts of the region's cities, changing economic and political fortunes. From early sparse descriptions, the travelogues would become much detailed, with reports of urban centres on the Ganges, rivalries between the European companies, and the growing importance of Calcutta. Domestic travellers left no accounts of their sojourns but had an immense impact on the economy of Bengal. This article attempts to chart the changing fortunes of urban centres, commercial activities, as glimpsed through these foreign travel writings and the economic consequences of travel as revealed by pilgrimages and fairs.
