丸山博が, 乳児死亡の構造に着目し, 新生児死亡率を母胎・母体を取り巻く生活環境の指標と位置づけ, アルファ・インデックスを発表するに至った経緯を把握した。その上で, 乳児死亡の構造に着目しながら, およそ100年間にわたる乳児死亡に関する指標の変動・水準の概要を, 全国, 都道府県別に明らかにすることを試みた。特に戦間期, 東北地方青森県に注目した分析からは, 明治期から大正期にかけて, 全国的に母胎・母体の改善が進行していたことと, 暗黒の中の暗黒と称された東北地方青森県においても, 全国と同じ枠組みの中でその改善が進行していたことが明らかになった。
This study examines the structure of infant mortality, using the alpha-index to outline the living environment indicators surrounding neonatal mortality and pregnant women's health. 
Subsequently, while investigating the structure of infant mortality, this study elucidates the variation and level of indicators related to infant mortality across approximately 100 years, segmented by prefectures. 
Particularly during the interwar period, from an analysis focused on the Tohoku region's Aomori Prefecture from Meiji to Taisho periods, it becomes clear that there was nationwide progress in the improvement of pregnant woman's health and that even in the Tohoku region's Aomori Prefecture, once called the dark among the dark, improvement occurred within the same nationwide framework.
