Abstract |
In this paper, confusion and difficulties related to genuine self experienced by bipolar disorder survivors are discussed. According to Giddens, in very modern societies, people are forced to define self-identity anew. When defining self-identity, it is necessary for the self to act as the interpreter of action and to carry out a self-narrative. However, a bipolar disorder survivor cannot become such a self. This involves a phenomenon of unexplained emotion as well as a phenomenon of self-story dysfunction. Furthermore, the fact that the degree of disability is not severe results in employment and identity uncertainty. This uncertainty further confuses identity. Furthermore, placing them in a social welfare system, results in difficulties for them. We believe it is imperative to capture the whole of their lives so as to ensure more diversified support.
