Abstract |
In recent years, Chinese migrant workers have shown more potential for mobility.
Although many previous studies have described the passive role of migrant workers in their transnational migration, they tend to plan their movements strategically and make it a beneficial throughout the course of their lives. It is necessary to examine this social phenomenon completely and conduct an in-depth analysis so as to portray the reality of their migration process.
This paper examines Chinese migrant workers' transnational mobilization through a case study of Chinese technical intern trainees who went to Japan for three-year period of training. The first section reviews the literature of the study of Chinese technical intern trainees and transnational communities, especially Ghassan Hage's existential mobility theory as the framework used in this study. The second section outlines the results of the in-depth interviews conducted with eight former Chinese technical intern trainees. Furthermore, each episode is classified. In the third section, the characteristics of their movements using the framework of existential mobility and physical mobility are analyzed. The results of the interviews revealed that existential mobility and physical mobility can be transferred to each other by social capital. This was the principal theoretical finding of this paper.
This study provides a new understanding of Chinese migrant workers' mobility and attempts to search for possibilities of their transnational mobilization, not only physically but also their subjective world. The findings also predict global mobility trends.
