This thesis examines the transformation of the folklore of people living in a Geisha community, Kamishichiken, located northwest of Kyoto. In particular, it investigates how customs and habits have changed as a result of urbanization.
Researchers have pointed that changes taking place within the city should be considered in terms of the relationship between residents and outsiders, which has had a strong effect on everyday life and has required the city to remain flexible. For residents of the city, life change has been intense as a result of the urban transformation. However, in spite of this transformation, the city life has remained much like that of a rural town, and I presume folk beliefs have played a major role in keeping civil life united.
In this thesis, I mainly examine changes in the city's customs and habits, where we find the transformation of folk customs. I focus on a unique Geisha community located at the city border. In addition, I explore the issue of whether the Geisha community has produced new city folklore or has changed itself.
