Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to consider the relationship between Oshiro Tatsuhiro's idea on writing style and social context.
Oshiro Tatsuhiro (1925‒) is a writer in Okinawa who has been seeking ways that "Okinawan literatures" express its originality. One of his central concerns was how to incorporate the local dialect into literary texts. In a short novel Kamenokoubaka (1966), Oshiro created an artificial language called "Jikkenhougen (Experimental Dialect)". It was tried to express the regional language used in Okinawa through the dialogue portions of the text (especially by modifying the ending words).
Since Higashi Mineo's Okinawa no Shounen (1971), following young Okinawan writers actively use the dialect in their works. However Oshiro had a concern that their dialect had been used without much thought. And he changed his writing style of dialect in fictional text. He limited the dialect use within the vocabulary which is not able to be translated into Japanese.
Why did he change his dialectal writing method? This is an interesting question for sociology of literature. In this paper, firstly we inquire Oshiro's critical discourses toward young writers concerning the use of dialects and explore how he shifted his writing method. Secondly, we examine Oshiro's writing methodological shift by borrowing the Pierre Bourdieu's concept of "struggle in the field of cultural production". Through this paper, we will elucidate the mechanism in which style of literature is linked to identity politics.
