For three decades, research on parental mediation of children's television viewing has drawn considerable attention  here search has mainly focused on the classifications of the mediation strategies and on the determinants of these strategies.
 Parents use three major strategies in affecting children's television viewing: restrictive mediation, instructive mediation, and coviewing.  The research, however, seems contradictory, for instance, as to the corresponding frequency of each mediation,  because the definitions of the above mentioned strategies still vary among researchers. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes that a new  reasonable definition of coviewing is necessary. In particular, it should involve:  (1) interactions and social relationships between children and the coviewer,  (2)  the presence or absence of parental intention to mediate children's television viewing, and (3) adistinction between coviewing and the provision of comments  about television content.
