昨年度末に学事振興資金を得て『冬物語』の翻訳を終えたため、本年度は2024年11月開催の多賀城創建1300年記念の『冬物語』の上演に向けて、シェイクスピア・カンパニーメンバーと読書会とワークショップを開催し、シェイクスピアの意義を言語と身体を通して確認する作業を行った。2022年はパンデミックとの共存の道を歩み始めたのみならず、2023年3月は東日本大震災の12年目にあたる。震災では多賀城市も大きな被害と死傷者を出したという事実に向き合いつつ、『冬物語』の持つ「復活」のテーマとシェイクスピア劇が描く人間のレジリエンスを確認したことも大きな成果であり、この体感を学会で発表し、大学教育にも生かすことができた。
本年度の研究と実践は3つの段階を踏んで行った。まず本学事振興資金を得て出版した『真訳 シェイクスピア四大悲劇』をもとに、7月にシェイクスピア劇の歴史的な側面と舞台上での身体的な側面を融合する研究会を行った。2段階目では、研究会を仙台に移し、シェイクスピア・カンパニーと『冬物語』の朗読研究会を行った。研究会では石井美樹子氏と下館和己氏に歴史的な背景の講義を受けながら、原作の読み解きを深めていった。実際に朗読を繰り返しながら、読み解きに歴史上の知識をそこに注入しつつ、身体と言葉とが融合するさまを参加者は体感した。最後に2月からは多賀城市とその近隣の市民たちを巻き込んでのワークショップを開催した。ここでは『真訳 シェイクスピア四大悲劇』の中の劇をそれぞれ1分間で演じることで市民とともにシェイクスピアの意義を考察した。また、石井氏と小菅隼人氏を講師に迎え、市民・講師・カンパニーメンバーの三つ巴のシェイクスピア体験が可能となった。音楽に関しては、慶應義塾大学の英語ドラマクラスを履修した学生の協力を得ることができたことも大きな助けとなった。
その成果は2月26日に多賀城市で一般市民に向けて発表された。今回の実戦で得た知見を、今後慶應義塾のシェイクスピアの授業以外にも身体知教育で生かしていくことを目指す。
We finished the translation of _The Winter's Tale_ with the Keio Academic Promotion Funding at the end of last academic year, and we have moved on in preparation for the performance of the play as an event for the 1300th anniversary of the founding of Tagajo in November 2024. We participated in reading group meetings and workshops with the Shakespeare Company based in Sendai which will perform the play in the event, and confirmed the importance of th play through language and the body work. This academic year, not only saw our coexistence with the pandemic, but also marked the 12th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Confronting the fact that the city of Tagajo was also severely damaged and suffered casualties in the disaster, we also pursued the theme of 'resurrection' in _The Winter's Tale_ and the resilience of Shakespeare's plays.
This year's research was conducted in three phases.
Firstly, based on the publication of the book _The Correct Translation: Shakespeare's Four Great Tragedies_, which was funded by the Keio Academic Promotion Funding, a research meeting was held in July to integrate the historical and physical aspects of Shakespeare's plays.
In the second phase, based on the above meeting, the workshops and reading meetings of _The Winter's Tale_ were conducted in Sendai with the Shakespeare Company. Here, commentary and historical background teaching by Prof. Mikiko Ishii and Prof. Kazumi Shimodate helped participants deepen the interpretation of the play. While presenting the dramatic readings from the play, the participants experienced the fusion of body movements and spoken words.
Finally, from February, workshops were held involving citizens of Tagajo City and its neighbourhood. Here, citizens were able to experience the essence of Shakespeare by performing plays from _The Correct Translation: Shakespeare's Four Great Tragedies_. Prof. Ishii and Prof. Hayato Kosuge were invited as lecturers. For the music of the plays, the project was also able to enlist the help of a former student who had taken the English drama class at Keio University.
The project outcome was presented to the general public in Tagajo on 26 February. The final aim is to make use of the knowledge gained from this research in classes of "Learning Through Affective Experience" in addition to Shakespeare classes at Keio University.
