青年期までは詩人・劇作家として名を成していたユゴー（1802-1885）が、壮年期以降いかにして「小説家」として自己形成していったのか。「詩人」と「小説家」との棲み分けは、この作家の内面においていかになされていたのか、あるいはなされていなかったのか。ユゴーの創作活動のみならず、作品受容や作家像の変遷にも関わるその謎に光を当てるのが、本研究の目的である。
2年計画の1年目にあたる本年度は、共訳によりミシェル・ビュトール『レペルトワールII［1964］』を上梓した。本書は、20世紀フランスを代表する作家ビュトールによる評論集であり、私はそのうち2つの論考（「さかさまのバベル」および「小説家ヴィクトル・ユゴー」）の訳出を担当した。前者はユゴーの韻文を中心に分析する一方、後者は、そのタイトルが端的に示すように、散文作家としてのユゴーを対象としている。同じ作家の2つの側面を鋭く対比させるその筆致は、本研究の考察を深める大きな契機となったことはもちろんだが、そればかりでなく、論考中豊富に引用されるユゴーのテキストを訳出することで、これまで日本の読者には未知であった韻文・散文作品を多少なりとも明るみに出すことができたと信じている。
また、当初の研究計画には含まれていなかったものの、文化資源学会からの依頼により「ユゴーと文化財保護〜『ノートル＝ダム・ド・パリ』を中心に」と題した講演を行った。小説『ノートル=ダム』の大ヒットが、現在世界遺産となっているパリの大聖堂の修復と保護に大きく貢献したことはよく知られている。しかしこの作品が出版された1831年当時、ユゴーは一般にはまだ「詩人」として認識されていた。この講演では、10〜20代に書かれた詩作品と本小説とに通底するテーマを炙り出すことで、文化財保護を訴えるためのメディアとしての両者をユゴーがどのように使い分けていたのか考察した。
How did Victor Hugo (1802-1885), who was above all known as a poet and playwright before his exile, form himself as a "novelist" from the 1860s? What is the distinction between "poet" and "novelist" for this writer? Besides, did the distinction really exist in him? Our research aims to shed light on this mystery which concerns not only Hugo's works but also their reception and the transition of his image as a writer.
During the 2021 academic year, we translated some articles from "Répertoire II [1964]", which is a collection of reviews by Michel Butor, a famous French writer of the 20th century. Among others, two reflections: "Babel en creux" and "Victor Hugo romancier" contribute to deepen our research. While this one is about Hugo's verses, this one is devoted, as its title suggests, to a Hugo as a prose writer. On the one hand, the remarkable contrast between the two aspects of the same writer, which Butor highlights, was of course a great opportunity to develop our research, on the other hand, the translation of Hugo's texts, cited extensively in the article may have shed some light, it seems to me, on certain works unknown to Japanese readers.
We also gave a lecture entitled "Hugo and the protection of cultural heritage – Around Notre-Dame de Paris" at the request of the Association for the Study of Cultural Resources. We know that this novel, the bestseller of the 19th century, largely contributed to the restoration and protection of the cathedral, now listed as a World Heritage Site. However, when his work was published in 1831, Hugo was still generally known as a "poet". In this conference, we have examined how Hugo used the two means, poetry and novel, to appeal for the protection of cultural property, analyzing the leitmotif that intervenes in the texts of his youth and in this novel.
