以下、2021年度の成果・実績を今後の展望とともに報告する。
1) 初年度の成果をもとに2年目は数多くの発表の機会を得、本研究の学術的インパクトをさらに高めることができた。まず19世紀後半から20世紀前半の英国唯美主義・コスモポリタニズム関連の最新の研究文献と歴史的資料の収集・分析を行った。当該分野で世界的に知られる研究者の最新刊を含む文献や、再評価すべき英日の同時代知識人の文献を多く入手し研究に反映させることができた。
2) これらの収穫により、本研究の遂行に向け以下のものを含む多くの成果をあげることができた。6月、本塾文学研究科英米文学専攻主催の合同セミナーのゲストとして、研究者・大学院生向けに「留学のすゝめ：オンライン時代におけるオフラインの学問的価値」と題する発表を行い、コロナ禍での国際的研究の新たな意義を論じた。同月、本塾文学部設置科目「ジェンダーの変容I」の講師として、唯美主義とジェンダー/セクシュアリティに関する発表を行った。9月、事務局長を務める慶應愛書家倶楽部（会長：髙宮利行本塾名誉教授）の例会開催に企画・司会・発表者として成功し、唯美主義・大学史・書物文化史を繋ぐオクスフォードの学者John Sparrowについて発表を行った。同月、5学術団体が共同開催した19世紀イギリス文学合同研究会に日本オスカー・ワイルド協会代表として参加し、ワイルド芸術・批評における「怠惰な知のスタイル」をめぐる発表を行った。10月、日本ウォルター・ペイター協会にて、唯美主義の「新しさ」のもつ歴史性について発表を行った。1月、リアリズム文学研究会主催のシンポジウム「旅するリアリズム：近代文学における外部世界との接触」に招聘され、英国唯美主義におけるリアリズムの位置をめぐる発表を行った。この大会は、幻戯書房から近く書籍化されることが決まり、他の計画と共に本研究の3年目の実績として重要な位置付けを担うものでもある。
Below is an outline of my major research activities and outputs during the fiscal year of 2021 (i.e. the second year of my ongoing three-year research project/proposal):
1) Further progress on my research into the nature, development and reception of cosmopolitan aestheticism in Britain between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, with reference to the latest historical/critical resources made available by my successful application to the Keio Academic Development Funds 2021. These included a significant number of new academic monographs and studies by leading scholars in the field, as well as many of important but neglected historical books and documents, both in English and Japanese, that could help illustrate the global context of aestheticism and its aftermath.
2) (Based on the above) Publication/presentation of my work to a wider academic audience than in the previous few years. In AY 2021, I was given the opportunities to present a significant portion of my research results before the following conferences and meetings relevant to this project, which include but are not limited to: an invited talk in June, 'An Encouragement for Studying Abroad: The Academic Values of Offline Learning', for the English Postgraduate Research Seminar (organised by the Department of English and American Literature, the Graduate School of Letters, Keio University); an invited lecture in June, on 'Aestheticism and Gender/Sexuality: Aspects of the Late Nineteenth-Century British Literary Networks', delivered as part of a Keio lecture series entitled 'Transformation of Gender I'; a talk on John Sparrow's Association Copies (1978) before the 43rd meeting of The Keio University Society of Bibliophiles (of which I have served as Secretary for many years), which I also organised and chaired online; an invited talk in September, on 'The Importance of Doing Nothing: Styles of Radical Idleness/Laziness in Oscar Wilde', delivered at the Nineteenth-century English Studies Joint Conference, which I attended as a representative of The Oscar Wilde Society of Japan; an invited talk in October, on 'Novelty in Walter Pater', at the 59th annual meeting of The Walter Pater Society of Japan; and an invited talk in January, entitled 'Against Nature: The Place of Realism in British Aestheticism', delivered at the 'Travelling Realism: Encounters with the Outside World in Modern Literature' symposium, organised by The Literary Realism Research Group. A book based on this academic symposium is planned to be published within the next couple of years (by Genki Shobo), to which I am preparing to contribute a chapter that will be a revised and expanded version of the paper I read at the symposium.
