本研究は英語のX thing構文が以下に例示するように引用表現として機能する場合があることを示した。

(1)［状況説明］ゲームの解説係がcurse「呪い」に言及したあと話が逸れる。しばらくして，解説を聞いていたゲーム参加者が次のように言う。
Can we go back to the … curse thing?
（映画 Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle）
話を戻せないかな，その…呪いの話に。

ここで言う引用とは，

(2) 他者（話し手以外の個人，話し手以外の大小さまざまな規模の集団，または過去の話し手）が実際に（または心の中で）発した言葉（の全体または一部）をあくまで他者の言葉であると（場合によっては引用符を利用することで）示しながら，（場合によっては多少の変更を伴いつつ）自分の言葉に取り込むこと

を指す。この定義は引用という概念に段階性を認めるものである。
X thing構文にはまた別の機能があることがすでに指摘されている。その機能とは以下に例示するdistancingの機能（本稿ではこれを「他者の心的態度を共有していないことを示す機能」と定義する）である。

(3) ［状況説明］SheldonとWozniakはタートルネックで知られていたSteve Jobsの悪口を言っている。
Sheldon:　I care neither for turtlenecks nor showmanship.
Wozniak:　Yeah, I never got that turtleneck thing.

Sheldon：　タートルネックもエンタメ性も興味ないんで。

本研究はX thing構文の引用用法がこの遠化用法と連続体をなすことも示した。以下のように引用用法にも遠化用法にも分類できる実例が多く存在するのである。

(4) I've decided to get over that whole "you saw me naked" thing.

「あんた，私の裸を見たわね，ムキー！」みたいなの，やめることにしたの。
This study revealed that the English 'X thing' construction can function as a quotative as in:

(1) [CONTEXT] Nigel, who has been explaining how a certain game works, mentions some "curse" in passing. Several moments later, one of the participants says:
Can we go back to the … curse thing?
(Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle)

Here the concept of quotation is defined as a phenomenon where:

(2) the speaker incorporates (with some modification) (part of) the (actual or internal) words of someone else (it might be an individual, a community, or her past self) into her own words, showing (sometimes by using quotation marks) that those words come from someone else.

This definition allows for the fact that the notion of quotation is subject to gradation, some quotations being more quotation-like than others.
It has been known that the 'X thing' construction can also be used to create a distancing effect. The term 'distancing', which has been employed without any proper definition in the literature, is defined here as an act of showing that one does not share someone else's mental attitude. An example is given below:

(3) [CONTEXT] Sheldon and Wozniak are criticizing Steve Job:
Sheldon:　I care neither for turtlenecks nor showmanship.
Wozniak:　Yeah, I never got that turtleneck thing.

Another point the present study made is that the quotative use and the distancing use of the 'X thing' construction form a continuum. Many examples are attested which exhibit both properties as exemplified in the following:
